SHIFT: No Weekends
SCHEDULE: Full-time
POSITION SUMMARY:
The expert practice of the Cardiothoracic and Transplant Physician Assistant provides for the daily surgical operations of the Cardiothoracic and Transplant services lines, as well as, facilitation of hospital throughput and physician support with postoperative rounding. This position is essential in coordinating services as part of an interdisciplinary team of caregivers. Operational responsibilities include the coordination of patient scheduling, comprehensive patient education, staff education, postoperative after care, outcome management, physician outreach and customer service, and revenue integrity.
Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains, directs, and evaluates the activities impacting the progress of the Cardiothoracic/Transplant programs; maintains close working relationship with the Director of Perioperative Services regarding mission, development, and growth of the programs.

Develops and maintains expert knowledge of service specialty (procedures, equipment, supplies, surgeon preference)

Establishes / Maintains direct, collaborative, working relationship with Specialty Surgeons.

Assist Cardiothoracic/Transplant surgeons in the OR as appropriate and credentialed.

Facilitates the flow of patient care services.

Coordinates the efficient and timely flow of PHI between the facility and surgeon in a manner that protects patient privacy.

Serves as a patient advocate. Assesses, evaluates, and problem-solves operational processes to ensure quality care is delivered with efficiency, congeniality and dignity.

Works cooperatively with nursing services and ancillary departments to provide orientation material for all staff new to the Cardiothoracic/Transplant programs and provides for continuing staff education.

Assesses the capital and operational needs of the programs and communicates those needs appropriately. Assists in the identification of cost-effective approaches.

Works closely with the Director of Perioperative Services to evaluate and address quality care issues.

Works closely with Director of Perioperative Services to identify reimbursement issues and develop of strategies to address these issues.

Attends and participates in health care system committees and department staff meetings as requested.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Must possess or have capacity to develop knowledge of Cardiothoracic/Transplant specialties and how to work within a system to deliver multiple components of high level comprehensive care.
- Ability to communicate effectively to provide patient and staff education in an organized and understandable manner.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and manage time efficiently.
- Ability to adapt quickly and positively to changes in work methods, information needs and restructuring in the delivery of health care services.
Must be able to demonstrate understanding of national patient safety initiatives by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. Conduct and interpersonal relationships contribute positively to the delivery of quality care and services, and to orderly operation of the department and the facility. Skills are maintained and enhanced through consultation with interdisciplinary team members, participation in planning activities, and attendance at in-service and continuing education programs. Ability to demonstrate complex clinical skills within the framework of the physician assistant education and guidelines. Advanced physical assessment and critical thinking skills required. Ability to listen, interact and communicate verbally and in writing.

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Master’s Degree and 2 years Physician Assistant experience.
Preferred: Cardiothoracic and/or Transplant care in an acute care facility.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Required: Licensed to practice in the State of Texas by the Texas Medical Board. NCCPA certification. Valid DEA registration. AHA BLS required.
