Description

Performs the primary functions of a Registered Professional Nurse caring for patients undergoing procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Is responsible for adhering to all established Nursing Standards and Hospital Policies. Is accountable for managing all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment in the Lab and for promoting team work with physicians and personnel of other departments. Displays maturity, flexibility, organizational and communication skills in dealing with other people. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.
Principle Accountabilities: % Of Time Spent
1. Performs pre and post care management of cath/EP patients, including IV access, phlebotomy, groin management, patient education and discharge or transfer to nursing division. Ensures proper handoff to other disciplines through verbal or written communication. 10%
2. Administers medications and conscious sedation according to proper procedures. Monitors effectiveness and documents appropriately checking nursing notes for completeness and accuracy. 15%
3. Scrubs and assists physician in procedures including diagnostic, intervention, and devices in cardiac cath lab and/or electrophysiology lab. Uses and maintains sterile technique when setting up trays and during procedures. 15%
4. Operates hemodynamic monitoring equipment and records physiologic data. Reports any changes during case immediately to the physician. 15%
5. Makes initial and continuous patient assessments. Reports reactions, changes and/or significant incidents to physician. Evaluates emotional status of patient and provides support to patient and family. Explains procedures and treatments to patients/families ensuring understanding. 5%
6. Coordinates and provides professional nursing care to patients in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory/Electrophysiology Lab according to standard of care patterns, physician orders and individual patient needs. Conforms to recognized nursing techniques and procedures, established standards, and to the philosophy and objectives of the Hospital. 5%
7. Obtains supplies for physician during procedure and hands off same to physician/scrub 5%
8. Participates in inservice programs, workshops and meetings. Serves on committees as requested. Keeps current on new and changing procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory/Electrophysiology Lab. 5%
9. Responds to emergency situations when necessary. May act as team leader to delegate assignments and coordinate flow of department. 5%
10. Operates and trouble shoots x-ray equipment, injectors, IVUS, FFR, IABP and Impella 5%
11. Restocks supplies daily, maintains adequate shelf stock, orders supplies as needed. Accurately enters patient charges in STAR. 5%
12. Participates in orientation of new staff, documents competency. 4%
13. Participates in on-going performance and quality assurance projects. 4%
14. Performs other work duties as assigned. 2%

Education

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri Required.
Nursing Diploma or Associates in Nursing Required.
BSN or completion of BSN within 5 years of hire date is required.

Experience

Previous Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory experience and /or ICU preferred, telemetry required
The assessment, care and treatment provided by the Registered Nurse will be consistent with the specific age related needs of the patient. The Registered Nurse is competent to care for patient age groups including the adult and geriatric patient.
Current certification in Basic Life Support
Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification must be obtained within one year of transfer/hire
All registered nurses will acquire a minimum of 8 ACS hours/calendar year
Must take rotational call with response time of thirty minute

Working Conditions

Employee is required to sit occasionally, walk frequently and stand frequently. Employee must lift/carry a light (1-20 lbs.)and medium (21-50 lbs.) load frequently. Employee may be required to lift over 100 lbs. with assistance. Employee is frequently required to bend, squat, kneel, climb, and lift waist to overhead. Employee is occasionally required to reach forward and reach overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to use both hands for simple grasping and pushing/pulling. Employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards and CRT terminal work. Employee is frequently exposed to radiation and required to wear a lead apron (@12lbs) while standing for long periods of time during procedures. Employee is frequently exposed to body fluids.

The most significant of duties are included but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties.
